| Weekly Club Programs: The heart of our services to youth is our KOH weekly Club program. “Club” is a weekly gathering that occurs on the same day and time every week usually at a local district park that is highly visible and accessible to all community youth. “Club” is the “front door” of our organization and provides opportunity for youth to be introduced to our program and to begin to get to develop relationships with our KOH leaders and mentors. A typical Club event consists of a high energy activity; usually sports, games, a cultural activity or an excursion, Ha’awina character lesson and a meal. KOH Club programs run in 10- 12 week terms, 3 times a year. Small Groups: Small Groups are the cement of KOH, where long term positive relationships are developed with KOH volunteer mentors, young people, and their ohana, creating a support network. 6-8 youth are placed with a Small Group worker (mentor) who is responsible for the mentoring, ongoing intensive case management and family support for each young person in their care. It is the Small Group network that ensures each teenager is being appropriately cared for in our program. Once a mentor match is confirmed, home visits are made regularly in which KOH leaders introduce themselves and the KOH programs to the families, provide a calendar of upcoming events inviting the youth to continued participation, and become a familiar face to the youth and family. Special Events & Camps: At the end of each term a camp or special event is scheduled. We hold two organizational wide camps per year- an annual Summer Hui, and a winter camp. KOH Camps & Special events offer outdoor and survival based activities with an emphasis on hands- on teaching about the Hawaiian culture, including activities such as visiting lo’i kalo or visiting Wahi Pana (significant community sites) Junior Leadership: KOH youth age of 16-19 and presenting the attitude and qualifications necessary are invited to participate in our leadership development program. Ke Ola Hou Jr. Leaders attend leadership training and program planning meetings alongside the KOH adult mentoring staff. Our Jr. Leaders become key contributors in the development and direction of Ke Ola Hou, providing input, ideas and positive examples to other youth. Cultural Learning & Exchange Programs: Ke Ola Hou believes in the importance and strength of passing down traditional knowledge to Hawaii's youth. . We are convinced that by giving our young people the opportunity to learn about their culture and heritage, it will assist in establishing their purpose and identity and encourage self-esteem and worth. We include lessons in Polynesian song and dance, Polynesian protocol and beliefs, Cultural exchange trips abroad, and indigenous leadership. Cultural Exchange trips give young people opportunity to interact with youth of different Polynesian ancestry and share and celebrate the similarities and uniqueness’s in their culture. It also is an opportunity for our youth to visit our Parent organization "Te Ora Hou" and visit our Maori cousins in New Zealand. Many of our youth have never had an opportunity to travel and see the world outside of Hawaii, this provides a wonderful opportunity for our youth to broaden their horizon's and perspective of the world in which we live. |
